Hamlet is worried that the ghost he saw may have been the devil trying to tempt him into evil—but the play could be “the thing” that “catch[e]s the conscience of the king” and allows Hamlet to determine whether his father was indeed murdered—and whether that murder must be avenged.
Hamlet mockingly describes Polonius to his friends as an infant. Polonius announces the actors' arrival, and Hamlet teases him while Polonius introduces the troupe. Hamlet continues to make strange, layered puns until the players enter. Hamlet warmly welcomes the actors, recognizing some of them.

When Hamlet himself enters, he is confronted first by Polonius and then by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, whom he quickly identifies as Claudius’s spies.
Act II Scene 2 Summary. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern arrive to spy on Hamlet. The King allows Fortinbras to march his forces across Denmark. Following Polonius's advice, the King plans a meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia on which he and Polonius will eavesdrop. Hamlet taunts Polonius.
