The 1980 World Series was the championship series of Major League Baseball's (MLB) 1980 season. The 77th edition of the World Series , it was a best-of-seven playoff played between the National League (NL) champion Philadelphia Phillies and the American League (AL) champion Kansas City Royals .
With their victory, the Phillies became the final team out of the original 16 MLB teams to win a World Series. However, a Philadelphia team had won a World Series before, the last being the Athletics in 1930, exactly a half-century earlier; in a twist of fate, the Athletics played 13 years in Kansas City (1955–1967) before relocating to Oakland.
On Nov. 26, 1980, Schmidt was honored with his first National League Most Valuable Player Award. It was the perfect icing on the cake for the star third baseman after he led the Phillies to their first World Series title in franchise history and was honored as the World Series MVP.
14 Οκτ 2020 · • Phillies Alumni. Then, the most pivotal game of the season, in my opinion. On a Monday night before a small crowd of 21,000, the Phillies fell behind, 5-3, when the Cubs scored twice in the top of the 15th inning. What fans were still there had turned nasty.
