So from the sound of it, the most reliable way is to simply check if the ports for the gamecube controllers are actual controller-ports, and not just empty holes?
Depends on your Wii model. If it's the RVL-001 Wii, it's fully backward compatible with all GameCube games, if it's the RVL-101 or Wii Mini, it can't play any GameCube games unless you install Nintendon't.
