Estimates suggest that alcohol‐related impairment occurs in approximately 5% and 10% of nonfatal and fatal work injuries, respectively (Zwerling 1993).
Employers have tools to reduce substance use-related risks of injury and illness, lengths of disability, workers’ compensation and associated treatment costs, and promote successful return to work.

31 Αυγ 2020 · There were 305 fatal workplace injuries in 2018 from unintentional overdose from nonmedical use of drugs or alcohol. That was an increase of 12 percent from 2017. From 2011 to 2018, the number of fatal injuries from unintentional overdose increased on average 24 percent per year.
More than half never test employees for alcohol (55%) or drugs (57%) Six in ten (62%) take disciplinary action against employees found to have any amount of alcohol or illegal drugs in their system at work, but only three in ten (30%) would dismiss employees for this.
