4.1 INTRODUCTION. The purpose of levelling is to determine the relative heights of points of interest on the surface of earth. Thus, it involves measurements of distances in a vertical plane like distances in horizontal planes were measured in chain surveying.
There are various types of levels such as dumpy level, Y level, cushing’s level, tilting level, cooke’s reversible level and automatic level instruments for leveling in surveying. The process of measuring vertical distances in surveying is called leveling.
