The required quest point amount for each level can be seen with the command 'qps' in the adventurers guild. If the player has the required amount of quest points available when he advances a level, he gets the level with lowered cost and his quest points are reduced by the amount required.
The only way you can get an invitation is to complete the warlock quest and offer your soul to the Dark Gods. This will not however guarantee an invitation, but will assure that Dark Gods know about your aspiration to be a warlock.
Guilds have 45 primary guild levels. Guilds branch into sub-guilds (subs) totaling 15 levels, where your character specializes inside that guild. Usually the true power of the guild is unlocked inside its subs. You can join a sub guild only after you have reached level 45 in the sub's main guild.
Rangers are my favorite guild, and also my recommendation to newbies. All you need to start out is summon wild cat, beast speech, and kick. Cast summon wild cat to get a cat to follow you around and help you kill things, use beast speech to talk to it, and use kick in combat.
