By awarding the Zone 9 bloggers with its International Press Freedom Award, CPJ recognizes the important role that bloggers play in environments where traditional media are weak or have been all but shuttered by financial hardship and direct or indirect state attacks.
17 Ιουλ 2014 · The detainees had all worked with Zone9, a collective blog that covered social and political issues in Ethiopia and promoted human rights and government accountability. Many of them were also contributors to Global Voices.
The Zone 9 bloggers are a blogging collective from Ethiopia, who maintain a blog in Amharic. On 25 and 26 April 2014, the Ethiopian government arrested six members of the Zone 9 bloggers network and three other journalists, who faced terrorism charges for their writing at the time.
1 Δεκ 2015 · Founded in May 2012, Zone 9 took its name from Ethiopia’s prisons, which are organised into eight zones, with Zone 8 usually used for journalists and dissidents. “Ethiopia is Zone 9,” said Chala. “Ethiopia is a big prison.” The blog was written in Amharic, and covered political and social issues.
14 Φεβ 2018 · All the Zone 9 bloggers are now free. A seventh member of the Zone 9 bloggers, Endalk Chala, was studying in Eugene at the University of Oregon at the time of the arrests. Endalk was EFF's Google Policy Fellow for 2014. He tirelessly advocated for his colleagues release throughout their detention.

In April 2014, six bloggers associated with the online group called “Zone 9” were arrested and charged with violations of the country’s much-criticized Anti-Terror Proclamation. Detained along with the Zone 9 Bloggers were three journalists who were socially-connected to the bloggers.
