Matthew 4:1 explains that the Holy Spirit led Jesus up into the wilderness. He fasted for 40 days to be with his Father and focused on prayer after being baptized by John the Baptist, as explained in Matthew 3:13. While in the wilderness, the devil tempted him three times.
Rather, He was led there by the Holy Spirit. Jesus was entering into the territory Satan had occupied. He fasted for forty days and, in His humanity, was inconceivably weak so that out of the depth of His weakness He might overcome the power of the Evil One.
The Bible says that at the age of 33, after being baptized, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to do an extended fast. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
In both accounts, the Holy Spirit leads Jesus into the Judaean desert before starting his public ministry, where he’d fast for 40 days and nights. “He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry,” Luke 4:2.
Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance and a transformed life. Your confidence and faith in God will be strengthened. You will feel mentally, spiritually and physically refreshed .
