Ample bullet selection — 90 to 160 grain — gives the cartridge plenty of versatility and makes it a gem for reloaders. A higher sectional density gives the 6.5 better penetration than other caliber bullets of a similar weight.
The cartridge has most users in the Scandinavian countries, where it is known as the 6,5×55 or just "the 6,5". It was introduced in the 1890s, and is still one of the most common cartridges in modern rifles built for the Scandinavian market today.
