The history of Sony, a Japanese multinational conglomerate, dates back to 1946. In September 1945, after the end of World War II, Masaru Ibuka started a radio repair shop in the bomb-damaged Shirokiya department store building in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo.
Sony was established in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. This electronics company, known for creating products such as the transistor radio TR-55, the home video tape recorder CV-2000, the portable audio player Walkman, and the compact disc player CDP-101, embarked on diverse business ventures.
It was renamed Sony Music Entertainment Inc. in 1991. Sony Computer Entertainment (currently Sony Interactive Entertainment) launched the PlayStation® home video game console in Japan. FeliCa, a contactless IC card technology, is used for the first time anywhere in Hong Kong's "Octopus" subway system.
