Country singer Johnny Horton was killed in an auto accident in Texas the same day that Ward Bond died, and a baseless urban legend arose that Horton was on his way to Dallas to meet Bond who was to offer Horton a role on Wagon Train.
Although his career was cut short by his premature death in 1960 at age 57, he was one of the most prolific of Hollywood's actors over a period of 30 years. He regularly appeared in 10 to 20 films per year, with the record year for him being 1935, when he acted in 30 movies.

Wardell Edwin Bond (April 9, 1903 – November 5, 1960) was an American film character actor whose rugged appearance and easygoing charm were featured in more than 200 films, as well as in the NBC television series Wagon Train from 1957 to 1961.
