Why are Asian elephants in Southeast Asia and China of particular conservation concern? In Southeast Asia and China, Asian elephants are facing escalating habitat loss and fragmentation, human-elephant conflict, poaching, and small populations that are increasingly isolated.

Due to their distribution across 13 countries, differing subspecies inhabit a range of habitats, from grasslands to tropical forests.
The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), also known as the Asiatic elephant, is a species of elephant distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from India in the west to Borneo in the east, and Nepal in the north to Sumatra in the south.
The main threats to Asian elephants are: Habitat destruction; Human-elephant conflict; Poaching and the illegal wildlife trade; Habitat destruction and human-elephant conflict. The forest habitat of Asian elephants has been decimated in recent years.
