A bathymetric map of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (shown in light blue in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean) The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a mid-ocean ridge (a divergent or constructive plate boundary) located along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, and part of the longest mountain range in the world.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is located at the juncture of crustal plates that form the floor of the Atlantic Ocean; it is considered a "slow-spreading" ridge by earth scientists. Running along the crest of the ridge is a long valley that is about 50 to 75 miles (80 to 120 km) wide.
The nearly continuous, global mid-ocean ridge system snakes across the Earth’s surface like the seams on a baseball. New ocean crust, shown in this map in red, forms along the divergent plate boundaries of the ridge system.
29 Οκτ 2018 · This map shows the overall configuration of the ridges and their names. Click the image for a 900-pixel version. There are more ridges whose names don't fit: The Galápagos Ridge runs from the East Pacific Rise to Cntral America, and the northern continuation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is called Reykjanes Ridge south of Iceland, Mohns Ridge ...
Bathymetric map showing a global view of the mid-ocean ridge (MOR). The mid-ocean ridge wraps around the globe for more than 65,000 km like the seam of a baseball, with an average depth to the ridge crest of 2500 m.
1 Μαρ 1998 · British and Canadian marine geologists took the next step and mounted a series of ambitious expeditions to study the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 45° N using every geophysical and geological tool available at the time. An American group focused its attention on the rift valley near 22° N.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which stretches for thousands of miles in the Atlantic Ocean, is the longest mountain chain on Earth. Understanding the geologic processes at the ridge, mapped here using satellite data, was crucial as scientists developed the theory of plate tectonics.
