The autoimmune theory of aging, introduced by Roy L. Walford in 1969, asserts that with age, the immune system tends to lose efficiency and experiences widespread dysfunction, evidenced by autoimmunity (immune reactions against one's own body proteins) and a decreased ability to respond to infection and other immune challenges.
22 Οκτ 2023 · The autoimmune theory proposes that the immune system is programmed so that it is no longer able to faultlessly distinguish foreign proteins from the body’s own proteins. If this happens the body’s immune system will attack and destroy its own cells.
25 Ιουλ 2015 · Contemporary theories suggest that the development of an autoimmune disease requires a genetic predisposition and environmental factors that trigger the immune pathways that lead, ultimately, to tissue destruction.

20 Ιουν 2017 · Here we summarize the most prominent autoimmune pathways and identify key issues that require resolution for full understanding of pathogenic autoimmunity.
14 Δεκ 2023 · Autoimmune diseases (AIDs) arise from a breakdown in immunological self-tolerance, wherein the adaptive immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues and organs.
6 Ιουν 2017 · This recognition, in turn, triggers inflammatory responses and engagement of previously quiescent autoreactive T and B cells. Here, we summarize the most prominent autoimmune pathways and identify key issues that require resolution to fully understand pathogenic autoimmunity.
