1 Νοε 2012 · A hive is a house, a place where bees live. It is a structure, usually man-made, that a colony calls home. The colony is the family unit consisting of a queen, workers, and—for a few months of the year—drones. In other words, a colony lives in a hive.
A honey bee colonies are complex societies consisting of members of the same species coexisting together in a unit, each with a specific task to be carried out. Colonies are intricate social structures regulated by the queen and carried out by worker bees and drones.
Beekeeping (or apiculture) is the maintenance of bee colonies, commonly in artificial beehives. Honey bees in the genus Apis are the most commonly kept species but other honey producing bees such as Melipona stingless bees are also kept.
Feral, or “wild,” honey bee colonies construct nests in cavities of hollow trees and in attics and wall voids of human dwellings. These colonies typically have 15,000–30,000 bees, whereas commercial hives are usually larger, with 30,000–50,000 bees.
The bees use the cells to store food (honey and pollen) and to house the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae). Beehives serve several purposes. These include producing honey, pollinating nearby crops, housing bees for apitherapy treatment, and mitigating the effects of colony collapse disorder.
