Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) happens when oil-secreting glands in your eyelids don’t secrete the quantity or quality of oil you need to prevent your eyes from drying out. MGD is a very common cause of dry eye syndrome .
When the glands become blocked, the oily part of the tears cannot be released. This causes the watery tears to dry up more quickly which results in the eye becoming dry and can make it feel sore. It is not usually a serious condition, but can cause discomfort and sometimes blurry vision.

HOW DOES Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) AFFECT THE EYES? In the early stages, patients may not notice anything, but if left untreated, MGD can cause eye symptoms. Clogged glands eventually disappear and become unable to make oils for the eye.
Meibomian gland dysfunction occurs when the oil glands become blocked or clogged with thick secretions, preventing a normal flow of oil. As a result, the quality of the oil that flows through these glands may be poor and lead to eye irritation and a crusty discharge.
