2022 marked 20 years since the original, London production of Bombay Dreams premiered in the West End at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on 19 June 2002. Inspired by Hindi cinema, or Bollywood, Bombay Dreams has music by A. R. Rahman, lyrics by Don Black with the book by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan.
The musical also was produced on Broadway in 2004. The story centers around Akaash, a young man from the slums of Bombay who dreams of becoming the next big star in Bollywood.

In A.R. Rahman. …Rahman composed the score for Bombay Dreams, a colourful satire of Bollywood films, and the show opened in London’s West End in 2002 without much fanfare. Rahman was already well known among London’s large Indian population, however, and ticket sales were strong, which prompted the launch of the Broadway version….
Bombay Dreams follows Akaash, a man from Bombay who dreams of becoming a Bollywood star. Against all odds, Akaash finds himself thrust into the world of Indian cinema when he falls in love with the daughter of a famous Bollywood director.
