26 Ιαν 2024 · The human body cycles through 2 phases of sleep, (1) rapid eye movement (REM) and (2) nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is further divided into 3 stages—N1 to N3. Each phase and stage of sleep includes variations in muscle tone, brain wave patterns, and eye movements.

You cycle through non-REM and REM sleep several times during a typical night, with increasingly longer, deeper REM periods occurring later in the sleep session.

After about 10 minutes in REM sleep, the brain typically cycles back through the non-REM sleep stages. Slow-wave sleep usually occurs again in the second period of this continual cycling, but not during the rest of the night (see Figure 28.6 ).
Brain waves during REM sleep appear very similar to brain waves during wakefulness. In contrast, non-REM (NREM) sleep is subdivided into three stages distinguished from each other and from wakefulness by characteristic patterns of brain waves.
