Buford Dam produces hydo-electric power for surrounding counties. Tubes continuously pass water through the dam at a minimun rate of 600 cubic feet per second (CFS). This powers a small, 7.5 megawatt generator.

The Buford Dam and Powerhouse are located on the Chattahoochee River at Lake Sidney Lanier in north central Georgia. The power plant came online in 1958. The current plant capacity is 126 MW.
The powerhouse was carved out of bedrock on the west end of the dam. This shot shows a glimpse of the powerhouse visible around an "island" of rock that was left after construction. Buford can produce 86 Megawatts, normal dependable capacity is given as 73 Megawatts.
