26 Απρ 2024 · Carotid endarterectomy (or CEA) can be thought of as the “tried and true” surgical treatment for carotid stenosis. It is the only way to remove plaque from the artery. Research shows that if the paient has NOT had a stroke or a TIA, carotid endarterectomy is generally helpful to reduce stroke risk if the narrowing is 70% or greater.
Antiplatelet therapy and aggressive treatment of vascular risk factors are the mainstays of medical therapy. Class I evidence shows that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is effective in preventing ipsilateral ischemic events in patients with symptomatic moderate- and high-grade stenosis.
