The Ural, also known as the Yaik / ˈjaɪk /, [note 1] is a river flowing through Russia and Kazakhstan in the continental border between Europe and Asia. It originates in the southern Ural Mountains and discharges into the Caspian Sea.
The Ural river is a unique ecosystem with a mostly undisturbed hydrological regime and is crucial for the preservation of the Caspian sturgeon species. This is the third longest river in Europe and the last large river in Europe unaffected by river regulation or damming.
The Ural river plays a special role in the Caspian basin (AzovBas 2002; Lagutov 1995), being the only free-flowing river in the region with a non- regulated hydrological regime in its lower and middle flow.
1 Ιαν 2022 · The Ural forms the geographic boundary between Europe and Asia and flows into the Caspian Sea (see map). The Ural drains parts of Russia and Kazakhstan. Within Russia, the Ural is 1446 km long and the catchment covers 124,900 km 2 (53% of the total catchment area).
