As they do, they pass hundreds of artifacts left behind by gold seekers. In 2022 the trail was officially designated the Chilkoot National Historic Trail.

Chilkoot Pass (el. 3,759 feet or 1,146 metres) is a high mountain pass through the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains in the U.S. state of Alaska and British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest point along the Chilkoot Trail that leads from Dyea, Alaska to Bennett Lake, British Columbia.
The Chilkoot Trail is a 33-mile (53 km) trail through the Coast Mountains that leads from Dyea, Alaska, in the United States, to Bennett, British Columbia, in Canada. It was a major access route from the coast to Yukon goldfields in the late 1890s.
The Chilkoot Pass, usually day 3, is the most challenging with rocks and 8 hours+ between camps. Several camp sites along the trail with cook shelters, bear lockers, nearby streams, outhouses and raised tent platforms.
Today the Chilkoot Trail is a 33 mile route stretching from the ghost town of Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia. This trail connects the Inside Passage and Pacific Ocean to the headwaters of the Yukon River.
Today, hikers can retrace the rugged and beautiful 53 km (33 mi.) trail from Dyea, near Skagway, to the shore of Lake Bennett. The route is lined with alpine lakes and century-old gold rush artifacts. Co-managed by Parks Canada and the U.S. National Parks Service, the Chilkoot Trail is Canada’s largest National Historic Site.
