Many originally French place names, possibly hundreds, in the Midwest and Upper West were replaced with directly translated English names once American settlers became locally dominant (e.g. "La Petite Roche" became Little Rock; "Baie Verte" became Green Bay; "Grandes Fourches" became Grand Forks).

Construction of a village, named for Louis IX of France, began the following year. Most of the early settlers were French; many were associated with the fur trade. St. Louis transferred to the Spanish in 1770, returned to France under a secret treaty with Napoleon and, following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, became part of the United States.
8 Μαΐ 2013 · Laclède named it after Louis IX and in honor of Louis XV, the current French king (for those keeping count, that makes four different French kings named Louis mentioned in this blog post). Louis IX was as well-known to 18 th century French colonials as George Washington is to 21st century Americans.
This was once a royal city in a region known as Picardie, and its royal roots still shine through. Senlis is most famous for being the town where Hugh Capet was elected King. His regin was the start of the powerful Capetian dynasty that only ended when France got rid of its monarchy.
St. Louis was founded by a Frenchman, named after a sainted French king, and nicknamed “the Paris of the West” during pioneering days. Today, St. Louis’ French Heritage is very much on view in its architecture, historic sites, fleur de lis images and by hosting one of the largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the nation.
