Implantable tracheal stents are woven mesh, self-expanding tubes that are inserted within the trachea to provide support to keep the trachea from collapsing. Less commonly, plastic rings can be surgically fastened to the external surface of the trachea to prevent collapse, though this is only useful when the collapse occurs within the neck.
Tracheal collapse can be dynamic (varying with respiration) or fixed (resulting from malformation). Diagnosis is typically based on history, physical examination, and imaging. Medical treatments include cough suppressants, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics. Surgical treatments are tracheal rings or intraluminal tracheal stents.
The trachea in dogs most often collapses at the thoracic inlet (green arrows) where the trachea bends to enter the chest. Tracheal collapse is a chronic, progressive, irreversible disease of the trachea, or windpipe, and lower airways (mainstem bronchi collapse).

The procedure involves placing a stent within the trachea to help prevent collapse, and this operation is performed by a board-certified veterinary surgeon. A tracheal stent is not without potential risks, and often medical management needs to continue after surgery.
Unfortunately, medical therapy, surgery, or stenting are not cures for tracheal collapse. When used appropriately in the proper patients, however, stenting can significantly improve the patient's quality of life when medications alone are no longer adequate.
Collapsing trachea can be treated medically, surgically, or by combining the two. Your veterinarian will discuss the various treatment options. Even with good control, most dogs will continue to experience at least some coughing throughout their lives.
