Cleaning out the colon before colonoscopy is helpful and can reduce the risk of infection. The cleanout we recommend is written below. Please prepare for your colonoscopy as follows: Your surgeon will instruct you whether or not to stop these medications.
At 2 PM on the afternoon before your colonoscopy, take 4 Dulcolax laxative tablets (Bisacodyl, 5 mg each). These can be purchased over the counter. At 6 PM begin the preparation solution (Colyte or equivalent) on ice. Colyte can be flavored with Crystal Light. You must fill the entire 4 liters with water.

Your doctor will tell you which preparation solution to use before your colonoscopy. Follow the instructions in the table below if you’ve been told to use MiraLAX, Dulcolax, and simethicone. Follow alternate instructions if your doctor has told you to use one of these solutions instead:
At 5:00 PM on the evening before your colonoscopy, take four Dulcolax tablets. At 6:00 PM on the evening before your colonoscopy: Drink 32 ounces of the mixed solution by drinking an 8-ounce glass of bowel preparation every 15 minutes for a total of four glasses.
At 5 pm: Take 4 Dulcolax® tablets by mouth. At 6 pm: Mix half a bottle of Miralax® with 32 ounces of Gatorade until dissolved. Drink 1 glass (about 8 oz) of solution every 15 minutes until all 32 ounces are gone. If you become nauseated, follow nausea instructions. You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before your arrival time.
Take 2 bisacodyl (Dulcolax) tablets. Make sure you’re at home and near an unoccupied bathroom. The bowel-preparation solution can work quickly and will cause multiple bowel movements. Mix 1/2 of the 8.3-ounce bottle of MiraLAX (7 capfuls) with one 32-ounce bottle of Gatorade.
