17 Φεβ 2021 · If you need the output to be playable in non-FFmpeg based players add -vf format=yuv420p : ffmpeg -i input.mov -crf 18 -vf format=yuv420p output.mp4. You may notice a slight reduction in color fidelity, but it is required for wide compatibility. You can omit -vf format=yuv420p if you're uploading to YouTube.
The command to just stream it to a new container (mp4) needed by some applications like Adobe Premiere Pro without encoding (fast) is: ffmpeg -i input.mov -qscale 0 output.mp4. Alternative as mentioned in the comments, which re-encodes with best quaility (-qscale 0): ffmpeg -i input.mov -q:v 0 output.mp4.
Some HLS streams are in fact .mp4 file fragments, and this method would work to generate the .mp4 file from the movpkg. To detect this, you would have to look at the .m3u8 stream files in the .movpkg and check if the format is .mp4, then you could just change the file extension for the output track to .mp4.

If you need to encode to other formats compatible with MP4: ffmpeg -i input.mov -crf 23 -preset medium -movflags +faststart -c:a aac output.mp4. Use the highest -crf value that provides an acceptable quality. Use the slowest -preset that you have patience for. If the input is AAC audio you can change -c:a aac to -c:a copy.

Part of what I don't get is that the 'XVID' argument passed to the FOURCC writer is supposed to be, I think, an mp4 codec (from this link). If I change the filename to 'output.mp4' it tells me that the tag is invalid, so I have to believe that the XVID codec is actually making an avi ...
I need to convert videos for use in both a flash player and the iphone/ipod touch. I'm using the following batch script with ffmpeg: @echo offffmpeg.exe -i %1 -s qvga -acodec libfaac -ar 22050 -ab 128k -vcodec libx264 -threads 0 -f ipod %2. This always outputs an mp4 file, and I can always play it on my PC.
