Health systems perform multiple functions in society – they do not merely deliver healthcare services and other interventions aimed at maintaining or improving health. They play a role in protecting households from the financial impacts of both illness and the costs of healthcare.
The definition of health systems has enormous variations, especially regarding the boundaries of the health system (Figueras & McKee, 2012). The most widely accepted definition was produced by the World Health Organization in its World Health Report 2000.
