This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis that summarizes all available studies on the relationship between smoking and the risk of colonic diverticulosis. We found an approximately 1.4-fold increased risk of colonic diverticulosis among current smokers compared to nonsmokers.
Smoking has been associated with an increased incidence of complications in diverticulitis with a higher length of hospital stay and resource utilization. In this propensity-matched analysis, there was no difference in in-hospital mortality between tobacco smokers vs. nonsmokers with diverticulitis.

Smoking raises your risk for diverticulitis. In fact, in one study of patients with severe diverticulitis, 49% were smokers. Diverticulitis also tends to occur at younger ages in smokers than nonsmokers.
