The Indonesian Government hopes to develop a ‘world-class’ education system by 2025. However, numerous assessments of the country’s education performance suggest that it has a long way to go before it will achieve that goal.
At a time when Indonesia was experiencing remarkable economic and social progress, the report showed how education could be a linchpin for greater prosperity. Yet, the country was facing a significant challenge. While access to education had expanded significantly, levels of learning remained low.

To reach its education potential, Indonesia will need to improve teaching and learning environments, school management, and coordination across levels of government. Decentralization has created enormous challenges linked to capacity, as well as weak systems of checks and balances in education service delivery.
