In 2008, Hyperion Resources Inc., a Dallas -based energy company, had considered placing the 2,000-acre (810 ha), 400,000-barrel-per-day (64,000 m 3 /d) capacity refinery near Elk Point, South Dakota and approximately 10 miles (16 km) away from Vermillion, [1] among three other potential locations.

Hyperion officials were in Elk Point, South Dakota, on Wednesday to announce they were considering the small town on the Missouri River as a possible site for the energy center.
