13 Δεκ 2019 · Angel sharks are demersal “lie-and-wait” ambush predators found in the soft sediment of shallow coastal and continental shelf habitats. Hence, these sharks are highly susceptible to towed trawl gears and are easily entangled in large-mesh gillnets.
30 Οκτ 2023 · It is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The species once occurred in waters throughout the Mediterranean Sea and along the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Scandinavia to Mauritania. The common angelshark is a cartilaginous fish similar to a ray or skate.
Once considered abundant in the Atlantic Ocean, the angel shark (Squatina squatina) was classified as "Critically Endangered" in 2010, and recent studies from the IUCN in 2019 reaffirm their CR status.
With estimated declines of more than 80% in the last 45 years, the three angel shark species found in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea – Squatina squatina, S. oculata and S. aculeata - are all classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Squatina squatina, the angelshark or monkfish, is a species of shark in the family Squatinidae (known generally also as angel sharks), that were once widespread in the coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.
Angel sharks are the second most threatened family of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) in the world. We’re working at the cutting edge of conservation to protect angel sharks and create practical routes to their recovery.
