10 Μαρ 2023 · A key part of managing type 2 diabetes —or preventing prediabetes from getting worse—is sticking to a diet that makes it easy to modify carbohydrate intake to get your blood sugars in a safe range. For many years, the most recommended dietary approach for controlling diabetes was the exchange diet.
Each exchange list contains foods that are alike; each food choice on a list contains about the same amount of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and calories as the other choices on that list. The following chart shows the amounts of nutrients in one serving from each exchange list.
In general, examples of one exchange would be: 1 medium piece of fresh fruit. 1 cup fresh fruit cubes such as melons and berries. 1/2 cup canned fruit, fruit sauce, thawed fruit, or fruit juice. 1/4 cup dried fruit. FRESH | FROZEN | DRIED. 100% FRUIT JUICE. CANNED. *Grapefruit and grapefruit juice have many food-drug interactions.
1 Οκτ 2008 · Choose Your Foods: Exchange Lists for Diabetes has been designed to assist in translating evidence-based nutrition recommendations into food choices that promote the pleasure of eating healthfully.
You can use the American Dietetic Association food exchange lists to check out serving sizes for each group of foods and to see what other food choices are available for each group of foods. Vegetables contain 25 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrate.
The following pages separate foods into these seven groups: Starches. Fruits and Fruit Juices. Milk, Yogurt, and Dairy-like foods. Non-Starchy Vegetables. Sweets, Desserts, and Other Carbohydrates. Meats and Meat Substitutes. Fats.
In the exchange system, foods with a similar amount of carbohydrate per serving size are grouped together. The foods within each list can be “exchanged” for one another during meal planning, and you end up with about the same amount of carbohydrate.
