Geoffrey James RCA LL. D. (born January 9, 1942) [1] is a Canadian documentary photographer, who lives in Montreal and has been influenced lifelong by Eugene Atget. Like Atget, he has been fascinated with the built environment. Early in his long career, James made panoramic landscapes.
Geoffrey James is a picture maker who invests the raw materials of light, paper, and chemicals with the power to recall things.
Geoffrey James was born in Wales in 1942, read Modern History at Wadham College, Oxford (BA and MA), and emigrated to Canada in 1966. A self-taught photographer, he is the author or subject of more than a dozen books and monographs and is represented in major collections internationally.

29 Μαΐ 2008 · Recognized as an eloquent interpreter of landscape with his panoramic and large-format cameras, James has been taking photographs since the early 1970s. In the 1980s, his series on historical gardens in France and Italy investigated the overlap of beauty and rationality in the landscape and the shaping hand of human thought.
