The Gnutella network is a fully distributed alternative to such semi-centralized systems as FastTrack and the original Napster. The initial popularity of the network was spurred on by Napster's threatened legal demise in early 2001. This growing surge in popularity revealed the limits of the initial protocol's scalability.
Gnutella is an early peer-to-peer network that attempted to distinguish between exchanging music (which likely violates somebody's copyright) and the general sharing of files (which must be good since we have been taught to share since the age of two).

1 Φεβ 2002 · We captured the network's topology, generated traffic, and dynamic behavior to determine its connectivity structure and how well (if at all) Gnutella's overlay network topology maps to...
We have built a “crawler” to extract the topology of Gnutella’s application level network. In this paper we analyze the topology graph and evaluate generated network traffic.
The Gnutella network is analogous to a continuous global rave: an informal, decentralized, unregulated gathering without a permanent location. Network hosts, like rave attendees, come and go unpredictably, connecting and disconnecting as fast as ravers switch dance partners.
This chapter provides an overview of the original 0.4 version of the Gnutella network. It combines a conceptual overview and a user-friendly rewrite of the Gnutella protocol specication [168]. A historical perspective is provided, along with usage scenarios, which include joining and searching the Gnutella network.
