The Templo Mayor was the main temple of the Aztecs in their capital city of Tenochtitlan, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc. It was built in the late Postclassic period and destroyed by the Spanish in 1521, and its ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a museum.
It was once located half-way up the great pyramid. This sculpture was carved around 1470 under the rule of King Axayacatl , the predecessor of Tizoc , and is said to tell the history of the Mexicas and to prophesy the future.
