Japanese cedars are quite popular bonsai and, inspired by their natural habit, they are in most cases styled in formal upright shapes, also occasionally as twin trunks, groups and rock plantings. If you need help identifying your tree, take a look at our Bonsai tree identification guide.
Japanese Cedar Bonsai, known as Cryptomeria japonica, is a visually striking plant. Its naturally conical habit and thick, red, fibrous bark make it a beautiful addition to any bonsai collection.
Cryptomeria Japonica is an evergreen, monoecious, coniferous tree native to the forests of China, Korea and Japan. Known for its naturally conical habit and its thick, red, fibrous bark, the C.japonica has narrowly wedge-shaped light-green (fading to dark-green) leaves arranged in 5-ranked spirals around its shoots.
Japanese Cedar Bonsai. One of the most popular species of Bonsai native to Japan, these upright evergreens are challenging species and require a lot of attention and care. Its dark green foliage can turn shades of brown in the winter and the red-brown bark only compliments this. An ideal training species, these miniature cedars are reliably hardy.
Cryptomeria is much loved in Japan as an ornamental and as a bonsai. Although it is called the Japanese cedar, it is not a true cedar ( Cedrus ). It has compact blue-green foliage and peeling red bark. It has small needles 3/4 inch or smaller.
Bonsai is a Japanese term that translates to “planted in a container”. The art form is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism.
2 Φεβ 2012 · Bonsai. I purchased this Cryptomeria Japonica (Bandai Sugi) from Lone Pine Gardens in Sebastapol, CA in May of 2007. It is over 20 years old and has a great trunk and bark that resembles that of a redwood. Below is my photo journal of it’s progress.
