Jasper House National Historic Site, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, is the site of a trading post on the Athabasca River that functioned in two different locations from 1813 to 1884 as a major staging and supply post for travel through the Canadian Rockies.
Built in 1913, is one of the finest and most influential examples of the rustic design tradition in Canada's national parks. A short, beautiful walk leads you to the Jasper House viewpoint and interpretation panels.
Follow the short, beautiful trail to a wooden platform and look out across the Athabasca River to a clearing where only the footprint of log buildings from Jasper House remain. Jasper National Park is a four hour drive west of Edmonton, and five hour drive northwest of Calgary.
Jasper's House. In 1830, under the control of the Hudson's Bay Company, Jasper House was relocated to the west bank of the Athabasca River, 1.4 km north of Jasper Lake. By that time, the site was a strategic point on two trans-mountain routes: one through the Athabasca Pass to the southwest and the second via Yellowhead Pass to the northwest.
Jasper House National Historic Site of Canada is a forest clearing extending 110 metres along the Athabasca River to a depth of 150 metres back from its banks, containing the remains of at least three buildings from a former fur trade post, an associated cemetery, two historic trails, and other archaeological remains.
In 1924, Jasper House was designated a national historic site marked by a commemorative stone and plaque. The site is located about 35 km east of the Jasper townsite and accessed via a short trail to a wooden platform with a lookout across the Athabasca River.
For half a century, Jasper House served as a main stop for all Jasper Alberta fur traders using the Athabasca, Bess and Yellowhead passes, and as an important meeting place for travels, adventurers and explorers.
