The Missouri River washed away all remains of the original village of La Charrette (or Charette) many years ago. When Lewis and Clark were there, the mouth of Charrette Creek was across the river and perhaps seven miles upstream from where it now enters the Missouri opposite the present town of Washington.
A small French settlement of about seven houses, about 50 miles upriver from St. Charles, La Charette was the final white settlement that the Expedition would encounter as they journeyed toward Fort Mandan. The Corps spent one evening here on May 25, 1804.
Fort Charette was a French fur trading post established in 1790 near Washington, Missouri. It was visited by Lewis and Clark and other historic figures, but was destroyed by floods in 1842-43.

La Charrette (Marthasville), on the western frontier of Colonial Louisiana. At the time of the Louisiana Purchase by the United States of America in 1803, the former village of La Charrette was the last settlement for all voyageurs ascending the Missouri River.
