NSA La Maddalena used to be a military base that was entirely run and operated by the United States of America. It was a co-base, which means it might have been operated by the USA, but it could not be done without the authorization of the Italian government.

The creation of the base had an enormous impact on the small local population, boosting the military-industrial economy of the island that already hosted an Italian navy base.
Located northeast of Sardinia, this base allows the Navy to monitor all shipping in the northern Mediterranean. This base includes activities on three islands connected only by boat service.
