Oxford Collocations I've been comparing the examples but I cannot figure out why prone to is sometimes followed by to infinitive and other by -ing verbs. In theory prone to is a preposition and therefore it should be followed by nouns/pronouns or -ing verbs.

31 Μαΐ 2007 · I know that you can use "hard" for candy, but I don't think you can use it for other types of food. I can say that steak is tough as opposed to tender. Actually, colloquially, I would say "tough as shoe leather" if the steak were particularly tough, but I can't imagine saying "hard" for food such as meat or any other type, for that matter.
