16 Απρ 2024 · ACCOUNTABLE, RESPONSIVE, AND LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT. In a democracy, we are most concerned with ensuring that people will have the right to choose their rulers and that people will have control over the rulers. Citizens should be able to participate in decision-making.
After some clarity on how to think on this subject, we proceed to look at the expected and actual outcomes of democracy in various respects: quality of government, economic well-being, inequality, social differences and conflict and finally freedom and dignity.
Democracy Produces Accountable, Responsive and Legitimate Government. People have the right to choose their rulers, and they have control over their rulers. Citizens can participate in decision-making. Thus, democracy produces a government that is accountable to the citizens and responsive to the needs and expectations of the citizens.
22 Ιαν 2024 · For a democracy to produce an accountable, responsive and legitimate government, it must ensure the following— Regular, free and fair elections; Open public debate on major policies and legislation’s; Citizens’ right to be informed about government policies; A government free from corruption.
Accountable, responsive, and legitimate government. Economic growth and development. Reduction of inequality and poverty. Accommodation of social diversity. Dignity and freedom of the citizens. How do we assess democracy’s outcomes? Common features of democracies.
There is one respect in which democratic government is certainly better than its alternatives: democratic government is legitimate government. It may be slow, less efficient, not always very responsive or clean.
