History. Lunenburg County was established on May 1, 1746, from Brunswick County. The county is named for the former Duchy of Brunswick-Lünenburg [3] in Germany, because one of the titles also carried by Britain's Hanoverian kings was Duke of Brunswick-Lünenburg.
Lunenburg is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Lunenburg County, Virginia, United States. [3] The population was 165 at the 2010 census. [2] The community is also known as Lunenburg Courthouse or Lunenburg Court House.
Lunenburg is also historically known as “The Old Free State of Lunenburg,” a title bestowed at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. Lunenburg, largely agricultural, is known for its red clay and climate suited to various crops, mainly tobacco which has been and remains the principal cash crop.
