Madelia contains two properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the 1872 Flanders' Block and the 1908 West Bridge. [ 10 ] In 2016, a fire greatly damaged downtown, destroying at least eight businesses.
Madelia, “Pride of the Prairie” was established September 10, 1857. It was originally named Wapaca, however, within a year the name was changed to Madelia in memory of the deceased daughter of one of the founding fathers, Philander Hartshorn.

Madelia was founded in 1857, and named for the daughter of a first settler. A post office has been in operation at Madelia since 1860. Madelia was incorporated in 1872.
21 Μαρ 2023 · After two weeks, they still were in western Minnesota when, stopping at a farm to buy food, they were recognized by the farmer's teen-age son. The boy rode to Madelia and alerted townsfolk, who organized a posse and cornered the men in a slough of the Watonwan River. A shootout ensued.
The Watonwan County Historical Society was organized in 1935. World War II ended those activities. Twenty-nine interested persons met at the American Legion Post House, Madelia, in 1966 launching the present organization. Four objectives were adopted: Preserve and mark historic sites; Work with the Minnesota Historical Society;
Madelia is a community with a long and rich history, founded in 1857 by Philander Hartshorn. The name Madelia is that of his daughter who died at the young age of 13. Madelia was the first city in Watonwan County and at one time was the county seat.
