Hedestad, the town that is the setting for the popular crime novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson, does not actually exist. The town is a fictional creation of Larsson’s imagination, and while it is described in great detail in the book, it cannot be found on any map of Sweden.
Gnesta (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈgněːsta]) is a bimunicipal locality and the seat of Gnesta Municipality, Södermanland County, Sweden with 6,376 inhabitants in 2020. [citation needed] Gnesta is located in Södermanland, on the border to Stockholm County.

For a few hectic days in February and April 2008, Gnesta became Hedestad when the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was filmed. Hedestad is the rural town where Mikael Blomkvist, the main character, is staying during most of the book.
