Paleobotanists, scientists who study the origins of plants, hypothesize that dicotyledons evolved first, and monocots branched off about 140 to 150 million years ago either from the fusion of the cotyledons or as a separate line.
To distinguish between monocots and dicots, we need to compare different structural traits of angiosperms, viz. roots, stems, leaves and flowers. But, variations between monocots and dicots begin from the seed, which is the start of a plant’s life cycle.
