History. [edit] Newport, Washington seen in a real photo postcard mailed on October 7, 1913. Newport was given its name in 1890 due to its selection as a landing site for the first steamboat on the Pend Oreille River. [ 7 ] . Newport was officially incorporated on April 13, 1903. [ 8 ] .
16 Ιουν 2009 · Newport, originally in Idaho, acquired its name by virtue of being the “new port” when Albeni Poirier (1861-1936) established a trading post and port on the Pend Oreille River in the 1890s. Upon moving the short distance into Washington, Newport soon became the major town in Pend Oreille County, the last homestead frontier in the United States.
Newport is the largest city in Pend Oreille County and is nestled along the Pend Oreille River at the Washington-Idaho border approximately 40 miles north-east of Spokane. Around the late 1880s and early 1890s a small community began to emerge east of the present city of Newport.

Newport began in the 1880s as a village on the Idaho side of the river. The few settlers obtained their supplies in Sand Point, on Lake Pend Oreille, and transported them either by overland trail or down the river by raft or canoe.
A Pioneer Church that was built from scratch but used the original stained glass windows from the first Catholic church in Newport. The main exhibit in our railroad display is a Burlington Northern metal caboose.
The City of Newport, with a population of 2,114 is located on the Washington/Idaho border just west of the Pend Oreille River. With a comfortable elevation of 2,160 feet, Newport is a city that provides a unique experience of four distinct seasons.
