Bear Smart New Jersey is a public service program of Animal Protection League of New Jersey. Our Bear Smart Community outreach program serves to educate residents about bears, reduce unwarranted fears and increase tolerance of our bear neighbors.
Bear hunts are cruel and do not reduce complaints or incidents. Legislators who care about reducing bear incidents should support legislation that limits bears access to human food, such as the new feeding ban (below). Bear Smart initiatives (education, garbage control, and other nonlethal methods) prevent incidents with bears.
Today, bear hunts make it unlikely that most of New Jersey’s black bears will reach old age. Our Bear Smart community outreach program teaches New Jersey residents about bears and fosters a peaceful coexistence, replacing fear with respect and understanding.
