The largest Buddhist branch in China is Han Buddhism, or Chinese Buddhism, which accounts for the vast majority of the country’s Buddhists, as measured by the number of registered temples.
China has the largest population of Buddhists, around 470 million or 33.3% of its total population according to the new data of 2023. [1] They are mostly followers of Chinese schools of Mahayana, making this the largest body of Buddhist traditions.
Currently, there are an estimated 185 to 250 million Chinese Buddhists in the People's Republic of China. [4] It is also a major religion in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, as well as among the Chinese Diaspora. [2] Buddhism was first introduced to China during the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE).
