Yellow Taxis pick up street-hailing passengers anywhere in NYC. Green Taxis pick up street-hailing passengers in NYC except for below East 96th Street and West 110th Street in Manhattan. You can book trips for both yellow and green taxis through an e-hail app or by calling car service companies.
When the numbers on the roof of the cab are lit, it is available. Yellow Medallion cabs are the only ones authorized to pick up hails. Avoid cabs that are not the typical "yellow cab", especially if you are new to New York.
The medallion number, which is located on the hood, license plate and top of the taxicab as well as on the partition and your receipt, is the four-letter/number combination unique to that cab. It is comprised of a number, followed by a letter, followed by two numbers.
