The Ohio Players, American funk and pop band from Dayton, Ohio, that put an indelible stamp on Black music from the urban Midwest in the 1970s. They fused rhythm and blues, rock, jazz, and eclectic album art to create a regional brand of heavy funk on such albums as Skin Tight, Fire, Honey, and Contradiction.
The Ohio Players came into musical prominence in the 1970’s as one of the pioneer bands of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977 The Ohio Players landed three consecutive platinum albums “Skin Tight, “Fire”, and “Honey”.
The Ohio Players formed in 1959 in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Originally named Ohio Untouchables, they were the studio house band at Compass (3) Renamed the Ohio Players, the group signed to Capitol Records in Los Angeles in the mid '60s.
